Pregnancy is not only a time of physical growth and development — it is also the beginning of a baby’s earliest relationships.
Research shows that babies can begin hearing sounds during pregnancy and gradually become familiar with the voices, rhythms and sounds they hear most often. As pregnancy progresses, babies may begin responding to familiar voices, movement, touch and repeated patterns of interaction.
Many parents notice their baby responding to touch on the bump, movement, music, relaxation activities or the sound of familiar voices during pregnancy. These early interactions can help parents feel more emotionally connected and aware of their baby as an individual before birth.
Within the Pregnancy Bonding Programme, we use simple Touch, Talk and Tap techniques to encourage gentle reciprocal interaction and communication during pregnancy.
These activities help parents create calm, meaningful moments of connection using:
As babies begin responding to repeated touch, sound and interaction patterns, parents often become more confident in recognising their baby’s movements, preferences and responses during pregnancy.
These early experiences help support emotional connection, bonding and relationship-building before birth while also encouraging parents to slow down, tune in and spend intentional time connecting with their baby.
One of the key aims of Pregnancy Bonding is to help parents develop regular, familiar interaction patterns during pregnancy that can continue after birth.
Repeated songs, stories, voices, touch routines and calming activities introduced during pregnancy may become familiar and comforting for babies after birth, helping parents continue building connection and communication into the newborn period.

Pregnancy bonding helps parents begin building a loving relationship with their baby long before birth. Through gentle touch, talking, movement and interaction, parents learn to recognise and respond to their baby’s movements and cues, helping to strengthen emotional connection and attachment during pregnancy.

During pregnancy, babies are already developing their senses and beginning to respond to sound, movement and touch. Positive pregnancy bonding experiences help stimulate early sensory pathways and provide meaningful experiences that support neurological and emotional development during this important stage of growth.

During pregnancy the brain naturally adapts specifically for motherhood. Areas linked to nurturing, emotional connection, responsiveness and protection begin to strengthen and reorganise, helping to develop maternal instinct. Pregnancy bonding activities such as touch, talking and mindful interaction with baby help support these developing pathways.

Talking, singing, reading and responsive interaction during pregnancy help lay important foundations for early communication and learning. Repeated exposure to familiar voices, sounds and rhythms may help support bonding, interaction and communication development during the early months after birth.

Many parents worry about knowing how to connect, communicate and interact with their baby. Pregnancy bonding helps parents feel more confident and comfortable engaging with their baby before birth, helping to build positive early parenting experiences and responsive caregiving skills.

Pregnancy bonding activities provide valuable moments of calm, relaxation and mindfulness during pregnancy. Taking time to slow down, connect and focus on your baby can help parents feel more emotionally prepared, supported and confident as they move towards birth and parenthood.

Pregnancy bonding sessions create valuable opportunities for parents to build trusted, supportive relationships with professionals during pregnancy. By engaging with families during pregnancy about attachment, professional, establish stronger connections with families before baby is born.

As parents build a stronger emotional connection with their baby, they may feel more motivated and engaged in positive behaviours such as healthy lifestyles, reducing alcohol or smoking, preparing for breastfeeding, attending appointments and creating nurturing routines that support both parent and baby wellbeing.
The Pregnancy Bonding Programme has been designed to support many of the priorities identified within national guidance relating to parent-infant relationships, early communication, emotional wellbeing and the First 1001 Days.
Research increasingly highlights that babies begin learning about their world long before birth. During pregnancy, babies can hear familiar voices, respond to touch, recognise patterns of sound and begin forming early experiences that influence their development after birth. Positive parent-baby interaction during pregnancy can help strengthen emotional connection, increase parental confidence and support the transition into parenthood.
National initiatives including the First 1001 Days agenda, Start for Life, Family Hubs and NHS maternity transformation programmes all recognise the importance of supporting relationships, emotional wellbeing and early development from the earliest possible stage.
The Pregnancy Bonding Programme provides practitioners with practical tools, activities and resources that help families begin building these important relationships during pregnancy through touch, communication, relaxation, responsive interaction and shared experiences.
Creating a Joined-Up Approach
For organisations seeking to strengthen support across the First 1001 Days, Pregnancy Bonding can be delivered as a standalone intervention or as part of the wider Hands on Babies 1001 Days Pathway alongside Baby Massage and Baby Yoga.
Together, these programmes provide a practical, evidence-informed workforce development framework that supports families from pregnancy through to age two, helping organisations create a consistent approach to attachment, communication, parental wellbeing and child development across services.

Pregnancy Bonding works alongside Baby Massage and Baby Yoga to create a joined-up early years pathway supporting families throughout the full 1001 days journey — from pregnancy through to toddlerhood.
Rather than being three completely separate programmes, each discipline builds upon the same core principles of nurturing touch, responsive interaction, communication, movement, emotional connection and relationship-centred support.
Families are introduced to early bonding and communication techniques during pregnancy through Pregnancy Bonding, before progressing naturally into Baby Massage after birth and later into Baby Yoga as babies become more active and developmentally ready for movement-based interaction.
This creates continuity for both families and practitioners, with many of the same touch, voice, relaxation and engagement techniques developing and evolving across each stage of the journey.
