Hands on Babies partnered with Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV) to strengthen attachment-focused support within Specialist Perinatal Mental Health Services. Through multidisciplinary workforce training, collaborative programme development and one of the first NHS pilots of the Pregnancy Bonding Programme, the partnership helped create practical interventions that support parent-infant relationships across the first 1001 days.
TEWV's Specialist Perinatal Mental Health Teams recognised the importance of supporting attachment, bonding and parent-infant relationships as part of wider perinatal mental health care.
While practitioners had access to a range of therapeutic interventions, there was a desire to strengthen the availability of practical, accessible tools that could help parents actively build relationships with their babies during pregnancy and beyond.
The Trust sought approaches that could:

Hands on Babies initially delivered Baby Massage and Baby Yoga Instructor Training to multidisciplinary practitioners across the Trust. The success of this work led TEWV to become one of the first NHS pilot sites for the Pregnancy Bonding Programme.
Working collaboratively with practitioners, Hands on Babies used feedback from the team to help shape the future development of the programme, ensuring that resources, activities and interventions were practical, clinically relevant and effective for use within specialist services.
The partnership extended beyond workforce development, becoming a genuine co-production project that contributed to the evolution of new attachment-focused support pathways.

A unique aspect of this partnership was TEWV's role in helping develop and refine the Pregnancy Bonding Programme.
Working alongside Specialist Perinatal Midwives, Clinical Psychologists, Psychological Therapists, Mental Health Nurses, Health Visitors, Occupational Therapists and Nursery Nurses, Hands on Babies was able to explore how attachment-focused interventions could be embedded within specialist services.
Together, the teams helped develop practical tools including:
This collaborative approach helped create a suite of interventions that could be delivered within real-world perinatal mental health settings.
One of the most significant outcomes of the partnership was the opportunity to explore how Pregnancy Bonding, Baby Massage and Baby Yoga could work together as a connected pathway.
Rather than viewing pregnancy and postnatal support as separate interventions, the project helped demonstrate how attachment-focused support can begin during pregnancy and continue throughout infancy.
The pathway provides practitioners with practical tools to support:
Creating continuity of support across the entire 1001 days journey.

"The Pregnancy Bonding Journal was fantastic. It gave me an opportunity to share my worries and concerns in a way that helped me understand myself better."

"I have found the Pregnancy Bonding resources to be incredibly useful. To finally have some practical tools, techniques and resources that we can share with parents to help with this often overlooked attachment moment is so beneficial."

"The unique tools and techniques that have been developed through the Pregnancy Bonding Programme have enabled my team to offer valuable practical and accessible support to our parents which I have no doubt will improve outcomes."
Many services recognise the importance of attachment and bonding but struggle to identify practical interventions that can be delivered within busy clinical environments.
The TEWV partnership demonstrates how attachment-focused support can be integrated into specialist perinatal mental health services through practical, accessible and evidence-informed interventions.
It also highlights the value of co-production, enabling practitioners to help shape the development of programmes that are genuinely useful within real-world services.
The partnership between TEWV and Hands on Babies continues to evolve.
The Trust remains an important strategic partner and is expected to play a key role in future Pregnancy BASICS development and piloting.
Together, the organisations continue to explore innovative ways of strengthening attachment, bonding and parent-infant relationships across the full 1001 days journey.
Hands on Babies works with Local Authorities, NHS Trusts, Family Hubs and early years services across the UK to develop workforce training solutions that are practical, scalable and sustainable.
