Hands on Babies partnered with Enfield Family Hubs to introduce Pregnancy Bonding as an innovative attachment-focused intervention designed to strengthen parent-infant relationships before birth. By training multidisciplinary practitioners and supporting the development of an integrated 1001 Days pathway, the project has helped families engage earlier, improved continuity of support and aligned closely with Start for Life and Children's Social Care Reform priorities.

THE CHALLENGE

Like many Family Hubs across the country, Enfield offered a wide range of support for families following the birth of a baby. However, practitioners recognised that opportunities to support attachment, bonding and parent-infant relationships during pregnancy were limited.

Research increasingly highlights pregnancy as a critical period for developing early relationships, parental confidence and emotional wellbeing. Enfield wanted to explore how services could engage families earlier, strengthen parent-infant relationships before birth and create a smoother pathway into wider Family Hub support.

The challenge was to identify a practical, evidence-informed programme that could:

  • Support attachment and bonding during pregnancy
  • Improve early parent engagement
  • Strengthen parent-practitioner relationships
  • Complement existing Start for Life services
  • Build workforce confidence
  • Create continuity across the full 1001 days

The solution

Enfield commissioned Hands on Babies to deliver Pregnancy Bonding Coach Training to multidisciplinary practitioners from Family Hubs and Health services.

Delivered through two face-to-face cohorts, the programme provided staff with practical tools, techniques and resources designed to help parents actively build relationships with their babies during pregnancy. Participants learned how to support families through:

  • Pregnancy Bonding activities
  • Belly rubbing techniques
  • Voice and communication activities
  • Fetal touch play
  • Pregnancy Bonding Journals
  • Stress management and relaxation activities
  • Parent education around attachment and bonding

The training enabled practitioners to begin delivering dedicated Pregnancy Bonding sessions within local services.

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS BEFORE BIRTH

Enfield Council case study the earliest of interventions

A key strength of the programme has been its ability to engage families earlier than traditional parent-infant relationship interventions.

By supporting attachment during pregnancy, practitioners are able to begin building trusted relationships with families before birth, creating stronger pathways into Family Hub services and improving continuity of support.

Pregnancy Bonding sessions help parents:

  • Develop emotional connections with their baby
  • Understand attachment and bonding
  • Build confidence as parents
  • Explore hopes, worries and expectations
  • Learn practical relationship-building activities
  • Access support earlier in pregnancy

The programme creates opportunities for meaningful conversations and engagement long before families would traditionally enter postnatal services.

Supporting Enfield's Social Care Reform Agenda

Through an Integrated 1001 Days Pathway

Building on the success of the Pregnancy Bonding Programme, Enfield Family Hubs and Hands on Babies are now exploring the development of a fully integrated 1001 Days Pathway that supports families from pregnancy through infancy.

The proposed pathway brings together Pregnancy Bonding, Baby Massage and Baby Yoga into a single attachment-focused model of support, enabling practitioners to engage families earlier, strengthen parent-infant relationships and provide continuity of support throughout the critical first 1001 days.

The pathway aligns closely with the ambitions of the Government's Children's Social Care Reforms, which place greater emphasis on early intervention, prevention, family help and relationship-based practice. By supporting families before difficulties escalate, services can build trust, improve engagement and strengthen protective factors at the earliest possible stage.

The integrated pathway would enable Enfield practitioners to:

  • Engage families during pregnancy rather than waiting until concerns emerge after birth.
  • Build trusted relationships with parents earlier in their parenting journey.
  • Strengthen attachment, bonding and parent-infant relationships from the earliest stages of development.
  • Support parental confidence, emotional wellbeing and infant mental health.
  • Provide a consistent relationship-based approach across Family Hub and Health services.
  • Create a seamless support pathway from pregnancy through infancy.

By combining practical attachment-focused interventions across pregnancy and the postnatal period, Enfield has the opportunity to create a sustainable model of early intervention that supports both Family Hub priorities and wider Social Care Reform objectives.

"The opportunity to create a connected pathway that begins during pregnancy and continues throughout the first 1001 days is incredibly exciting. By engaging families earlier and strengthening relationships from the very beginning, we can provide the kind of preventative, relationship-based support that sits at the heart of our Family Hub vision and wider Social Care Reform ambitions."

Why this matters

Many Family Hubs focus their attachment and relationship support on the postnatal period. Enfield's work demonstrates how services can begin supporting relationships much earlier.

By engaging families during pregnancy, practitioners can build trust, strengthen parent-infant relationships and create stronger pathways into wider support services. The programme highlights the value of viewing pregnancy as the beginning of the 1001 days journey rather than simply preparation for birth.

Looking ahead

The partnership between Enfield Family Hubs and Hands on Babies continues to develop.

Following the successful implementation of Pregnancy Bonding training and parent sessions, discussions are underway regarding the future development of an integrated 1001 days pathway combining Pregnancy Bonding, Baby Massage and Baby Yoga.

This approach would create a seamless attachment-focused journey for families from pregnancy through infancy, supporting Enfield's wider Family Hub and Social Care Reform ambitions.
