Barnardo's Northern Ireland partnered with Hands on Babies to deliver Baby Massage and Baby Yoga Instructor Training as part of its ABC PiP (Attachment, Bonding and Communication Parent-Infant Partnership) programme. This case study demonstrates how practical attachment-focused workforce development can strengthen parent-infant relationships, improve practitioner confidence and support infant mental health across the critical first 1001 days.
Barnardo's ABC PiP (Attachment, Bonding and Communication Parent-Infant Partnership) was an innovative early intervention programme supporting expectant parents and families with babies up to 24 months old across Northern Ireland.
The project was developed to promote healthy attachment, bonding, communication and positive infant mental health through therapeutic support and practical interventions. Working with families during the critical first 1001 days, the programme aimed to strengthen parent-infant relationships and improve outcomes for babies and their caregivers.
To support these objectives, Barnardo's required a practical, evidence-informed intervention that could be delivered by practitioners working directly with families through group sessions, one-to-one support and tailored interventions.
The organisation was looking for training that would align with its parent-infant relationship approach while providing staff with practical skills that could be immediately applied within their work with families.

In 2019, Barnardo's commissioned Hands on Babies to deliver Baby Massage and Baby Yoga Instructor Training for 75 practitioners working within the ABC PiP project and its partner organisations.
Training was delivered face-to-face across three cohorts of 25 staff members and included the supply of specialist training resources and demonstration dolls to support both learning and future service delivery. Hands on Babies was selected because of its strong focus on:
The programmes provided practitioners with practical tools that could be used flexibly across group sessions, individual family support and targeted interventions.

A key strength of the project was the ability to translate attachment theory into practical experiences for parents.
Through Baby Massage and Baby Yoga, practitioners were able to help parents:
The practical nature of the techniques meant that parents could easily continue using the skills at home, extending the benefits beyond the sessions themselves.
Training was delivered face-to-face in Northern Ireland and provided practitioners with the knowledge, practical skills and confidence required to deliver Baby Massage and Baby Yoga sessions safely and effectively.
The training was designed to support a wide range of family support activities including:
Practitioners were encouraged to use the techniques flexibly within their existing roles, helping to embed attachment-focused practice throughout the wider ABC PiP programme.

The Baby Massage and Baby Yoga techniques became an important part of the wider support offered through the ABC PiP programme.
Practitioners used the techniques to help parents:
Parents reported a wide range of benefits including:
Although the ABC PiP project concluded in 2023, the impact of the training continues.
Hands on Babies programmes remain in use and additional staff have continued to access both face-to-face and online training to maintain and expand workforce capacity.

"This training was commissioned because of the attachment focus of the training and the way that a practical parenting tool can be shared with the wider parenting community through classes, one-to-one support and tailored interventions."

"I loved this training. It was so practical and so relevant. I can't wait to share it with my parents."

"Baby massage was one of the best things I did with my baby. It helped with colic and sleeping which was amazing. I also really enjoyed making friends at the classes. It was so nice to meet people who were in the same position as me."
Many organisations are looking for practical ways to strengthen parent-infant relationships and support infant mental health during the first 1001 days.
The Barnardo's ABC PiP project demonstrates how Baby Massage and Baby Yoga can be successfully integrated within wider early intervention and family support programmes to provide meaningful, relationship-focused support for parents and babies.
By combining workforce development with practical family interventions, organisations can equip practitioners with skills that are immediately transferable into everyday practice and capable of delivering lasting benefits for families.
Although the original ABC PiP programme concluded in 2023, the success of the training continues to influence practice across services in Northern Ireland.
Hands on Babies continues to support organisations through both face-to-face and online training, ensuring that new staff can access the same high-quality, attachment-focused learning that made the original project such a success.
The project remains an excellent example of how practical parenting interventions can support wider goals around attachment, bonding, communication and infant mental health.
Hands on Babies works with charities, NHS organisations, Family Hubs, Local Authorities and early years providers across the UK to deliver practical workforce development programmes focused on attachment, bonding and early intervention.
